‘Alpha’ & ‘White Boy Rick’ Swap Release Dates On Sony Schedule

Studio 8’s titles Alpha and White Boy Rick are swapping release dates on Sony’s August-September release schedule.

Alpha, from director Albert Hughes, was originally scheduled for September 14 and will now occupy White Boy Rick‘s original calendar date of August 17.

White Boy Rick now goes to September 14 for an exclusive launch with a wide break on September 21. Smells like White Boy Rick, which has been a hot property and drama internally, is headed for an early awards season debut, and it wouldn’t be a shocker if the movie winds up at the fall film festivals.

The Yann Demange directed movie follows Rick Wershe who became an undercover police informant and drug dealer during the 1980s Detroit scene. Andy Weiss and Logan & Noah Miller wrote the story with Weiss, the Millers and Steve Kloves penning the screenplay. John Lesher, Julie Yorn, Darren Aronofsky, Scott Franklin are producers with Matthew McConaughey, Richie Merritt, Bel Powley, and Jennifer Jason Leigh starring. On White Boy Rick‘s new wide date of September 21, other wide entries include MGM’s Operation Finale, Amazon’s Dan Fogelman-directed romantic drama Life Itself, and Universal/Amblin’s The House With a Clock in its Walls.

Alpha, which will be released in 3D and Imax, is an Ice Age adventure set in Europe about an elite warrior who is injured and left for dead by his tribe. He bonds with a wolf that he tames as they face a bitter winter on his way home. Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt wrote the screenplay off  Hughes’ story. Hughes and Andrew Rona produce. Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson star. On its new date, Alpha will be on the marquee with Focus Features’ sci-fi thriller Captive State, Warner Bros./SK Global comedy Crazy Rich Asians and STXfilms’ Melissa McCarthy comedy The Happytime Murders.
