Universal Kids will expand its live-action scripted slate with Greenfields, a 20-episode half-hour series that marks the network’s first original comedy.

Derek Harvie’s single-camera comedy follows 11-year-old Max Graham and his eclectic group of neighborhood friends running a start-up out of mom and dad’s garage. As the network describes it, “Whether it’s the development of a dog translation device, creation of a drone-delivered coffee service, or ridding the Internet of trolls, these passionate young entrepreneurs are inspired to change the world while always finding a way to balance being friends, neighbors, and creators.”

“We know that kids are seeking out innovative storytelling that reflects shared experiences,” said Universal Kids GM Deirdre Brennan. “Greenfields is a salute to today’s kids – fearless, smart, diverse dreamers who are tech savvy and loyal to friends and families. It’s the perfect complement to Universal Kids’ scripted entertainment for kids 6-12.”

“We’re delighted that Universal Kids are featuring Greenfields as part of their fall lineup,” said Josh Scherba, EVP Content and Distribution at DHX Media. “From the talented producers at Six Eleven Media, this clever, funny show is just the sort of entertainment that today’s enterprising kids are going to want to tune in to watch.”

Greenfields is produced by Six Eleven Media in association with DHX Television’s Family Channel in Canada; it’s slated to launch on both channels in the fall. The series is executive produced by Harvie and Charles Bishop, and will be filmed in Toronto this spring. International distribution is being handled by DHX Media.

The series joins other international live-action programming slated for Universal Kids this year. They include, as described by Universal Kids:

Mighty Mustangs will mark its US debut on Universal Kids in June 2018. Produced by Matchbox Pictures, Mighty Mustangs is a goal kicking comedy drama about a group of 14 year old girls who abandon the sidelines and start their local soccer club’s first all-female team.

The Next Step, from Boat Rocker Studios, will mark its season six US debut on Universal Kids in August 2018. An international hit tween drama series broadcast in over 120 countries worldwide, The Next Step follows the lives of an elite group of dancers.

Nowhere Boys, from NBCUniversal and Matchbox Pictures, will mark its season four US debut on Universal Kids in the fourth quarter. In this season of the International Emmy Award-winning fantasy-adventure series, the Nowhere Boys return from a summer of magical training more powerful than ever.

Mako Mermaids, from Jonathan M. Schiff Productions, adds season three to Universal Kids in June. In this series, three magical teenage mermaids work together after a land-dweller boy named Zac accidentally becomes a merman.
