The Masters Wrap Gooses ‘Instinct’; ’60 Minutes’ Shares Demo Win With ‘American Idol’

The rebooted American Idol tipped the demo win ABC’s way on Sunday, while a Masters-goosed CBS took total viewers.

ABC’s singing competition scored its lowest Sunday showings yet in the demo and total viewers but still tied CBS’ 60 Minutes for the night’s top spot in the demo. In its first season airing on Sundays, Idol‘s most recent showing on the night more than doubled its two-hour slot, year to year, for ABC, by 157%  in viewers, and 114% in demo.

Meanwhile, the Masters conclusion boosted not just CBS’ newsmag but the entire primetime slate. Most noticeable was Instinct (0.9, 8.20M), which spiked three-tenths in the demo and 1.6M viewrs compared twith previous week. CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles (0.9, 806M) and Madam Secretary (0.6, 6.25M) both ticked up a tenth in the 18-49 age bracket.

The PGA’s annual major tournament from Augusta National came in with a higher profile this year amid the resurgence of four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods, who last won there in 2005. Coming off second- and fifth-place finishes in March, Woods’ resurgence made this the most anticipated Masters in many years. But Woods stumbled in the tournament, barely making the cut after the second round and finishing tied for 4oth. CBS, however, continued to air his shots throughout Saturday and Sunday’s rounds as Patrick Reed held off some big names to win his first Green Jacket by five strokes.

At 10 PM, ABC’s Deception (0.7, 3.74M) edged out Madam Secretary in the demo, but Madam blew past Deception in the demo.

On Fox, Sunday’s The Simpsons (0.9, 2.12M) response to critics of its Apu character came in even with previous week in the ratings, as did Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.8, 1.73M) and Family Guy (0.9, 1.98M) , while Bob’s Burgers (0.8, 1.73M) and The Last Man on Earth (0.7,1.54M) ticked up 1/10th.

NBC’s Dateline NBC (0.6, 4.27 million) was no match for 60 Minutes at 7 PM, after which Little Big Shots (0.9, 6.66 million) dropped a tad in the demo, while Genius Junior (0.7, 4.46 million) and 10 PM’s Timeless (0.6, 2.48 million) stayed steady.

ABC (1.1, 5.78M) took the night in the demo and CBS (1.0 8.33M) in total viewers. NBC (0.7, 4.46M) and Fox (0.7, 1.70M) followed.
