FX Orders ‘Y’ Drama Pilot Based On ‘Y: The Last Man’ Comic Book Series

FX has given a pilot green light to its long-gestating drama Y, based on the acclaimed post-apocalyptic science fiction DC comic book series Y: The Last Man. The project, from Michael Green (American Gods, Blade Runner 2049), Brian K. Vaughan, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force (American Crime Story, Pose), had been in the works at FX for several years. Green, who penned the adaptation, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Aida Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage, Turn). Melina Matsoukas (Insecure) will direct the pilot, which is from FX Productions.

In Y, all of the men are dead. But one. Based on the DC comic book series by Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Y traverses a world of women — exploring gender, race, class and survival.

The project, whose theme is pretty timely, had been on slow-track development because of Green’s busy schedule. Work on it accelerated after Green, along with Bryan Fuller, in late November stepped down as showrunners on Starz’s American Gods. This past January, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf praised Green’s script and was optimistic about the project’s chances of getting a green light.

Green and Croal will executive produce with Matsoukas, Jacobson and Simpson of Color Force and Vaughan, who have been working together to develop the series.

Y: The Last Man is a 60-issue science fiction comic book series published beginning in 2002. It received three Eisner Awards, and received the first Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story for Y: The Last Man, Volume 10.

Green co-created, with Fuller, American Gods which is going into its second season on Starz. He also served as showrunner of ABC’s horror drama series The River and created and executive produced NBC’s biblical drama Kings.

Croal is currently a writer and supervising producer on Marvel’s Jessica Jones on Netflix. Her previous credits include writer-producer on Luke Cage and writer-co-producer on Turn.

Top video music director Matsoukas served as director and executive producer on Insecure and also directed episodes of Master of None. Vaughn is repped by Verve and Ziffren Brittenham.
