Right-Wing Pundit Ann Coulter: Trump Is A “Shallow, Lazy Ignoramus” — And Worse Yet, A Bust On Immigration

Conservative pundit Ann Coulter provoked her customary amount of protest by appearing at a talk at Columbia University last night, though her message was a 180-degree shift from the one in her book In Trump We Trust.

President Donald Trump’s performance thus far “kind of breaks my heart,” Coulter said. “He’s not giving us what he promised at every single campaign stop.” She added, “I knew he was a shallow, lazy ignoramus, and I didn’t care. … What I’m disappointed in is he’s doing everything ‘Jeb-exclamation point’ and Marco Rubio said they were going to do.” Chief among the let-downs, she said, was immigration policy, where Trump has not fulfilled many of his campaign promises, including getting his famous border wall built.

Coulter’s comments were reported by the university’s student newspaper, the Columbia Spectator and the Daily Beast. Coulter appeared alongside blogger Mickey Kaus at the event, which was sponsored by Columbia’s College Republicans organization. The conversation was moderated by Rob Long, an outspoken conservative who is also showrunner of CBS sitcom Kevin Can Wait and a writer-producer with credits including Cheers.

The discussion was marked by some brief disturbances during the Q&A portion and protests outside the event hall by a handful of members of a group called Refuse Fascism, according to the reports. Coulter has built a career on poking liberals and moderates with books such as anti-immigrant screed Adios, America! and Godless: The Church of Liberalism.

Both Coulter and Kaus, historically a Democrat and an influential backer of Barack Obama, threw their support behind Trump in 2016. “He’s been completely feckless,” Kaus complained during the panel, per the Daily Beast. He also added his contention that illegal immigration from Mexico has “started to go back up as people started to realize that Trump’s a paper tiger.”

The comments from Coulter followed a series of recent tweets in which she has turned on the president. Even so, she said she would not change her vote if given the chance.

“I regret nothing,” Coulter said. “I’ve been waiting 30 years for people to say all these things” that Trump has said.
