The Middle star Neil Flynn is set for a lead role opposite Natalie Morales in NBC multi-camera comedy pilot Abby’s from Josh Malmuth, Mike Schur’s Fremulon, 3 Arts and Universal TV.

Written by Malmuth and directed by Pam Fryman, Abby’s is set at an unlicensed bar in San Diego where the regulars enthusiastically enforce a unique set of rules that give them a sense of community and allow them to avoid the frustrating behavior found at other establishments.

Flynn will play Fred, a fixture at the bar, grateful for a place to relax, unwind, and have a beer every night. In addition to Morales, who plays Abby, he joins previously cast Nelson Franklin, Jessica Chaffin and Leonard Ouzts.

Flynn is the first cast member of The Middle to book a new pilot. He is now wrapping up the ninth and final season of the ABC family comedy on which he has starred as Mike Heck since the series launch in 2009.

Flynn is currently on a streak as a series regular for 16 consecutive seasons — seven on Scrubs as The Janitor and nine on The Middle — which he he is looking to extend should Abby’s go to series.

With Flynn booking a pilot, the focus shifts to his Middle leading lady, Patricia Heaton, who also has done back-to-back hit comedy series, Everybody Loves Raymond, which earned her two Emmy Awards, and The Middle.

Flynn’s film credits include Mean Girls, Hoot and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He’s repped by APA and Skrzyniarz & Mallean.
