U.N. Blasts Donald Trump Over Israel Embassy Move

Countries around the world came together to collectively tweak President Donald Trump’s nose today. TV news networks took a break from their wall-to-wall tax-overhaul/government shutdown coverage to broadcast the largely symbolic gesture.

The United Nations General Assembly voted, 128 to 9, to condemn his announcement he would move the country’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Thirty-five countries abstained from voting. For those keeping score: Britain, France, and Germany, as well as India were among the countries voting for the resolution.

Also voting for the resolution: Syria, Yemen, Venezuela. File those under “that’s rich.”

Canada and Australia abstained, as did Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Croatia, and South Sudan, CNN reported.

“No” votes included the U.S. Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Togo and Tonga, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Guatemala and Honduras, the cable news net added.

The resolution, which does not name the U.S., demands all states “refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions” in Jerusalem, because it puts a thumb on negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

TV news pundits had noted Trump’s decision makes it difficult for that peace process to move forward – not that it was barreling ahead before his announcement. Today’s resolution vote gives life to Palestinians’ assertion the talks now are rigged against them, some talking heads argued.

Moments before the vote, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley warned the general assembly,  “This vote will be remembered.”

“When we make generous donations to UN we also have a legitimate expectation that our goodwill is recognized and respected. When a nation is singled out for attack in this organization, that nation is disrespected.”

“The United States will remember this day, in which it was singled out for attack in the general assembly… when we are once again called upon to make the world’s largest contribution to the United Nations,” she said.

Some of those TV news Washington wags seemed dubious Trump would make good on Haley’s  threat, in which she parroted what Trump said days earlier. They felt Trump recognizes how much of that financial aide Haley referenced is doled out to further U.S. interests.

Presumably, Trump won’t cut off his tweaked nose to spite his face, they argued.

Punch-back time!
