‘Get Out’ To Receive Producers Guild’s Stanley Kramer Award

The PGA will bestow its 2018 Stanley Kramer Award on Get Out, Jordan Peele’s social horror thriller that has been one of the most buzzed-about, and lucrative, movies of 2017. The honor will be given out during the 29th annual PGA Awards set for January 20 at the Beverly Hilton.

The Kramer award honors a production, producer or other individuals “whose achievement or contribution illuminates and raises public awareness of important social issues.” Last year, Jeff Nichols’ Loving won the award.

The guild will present the award to Get Out producers Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum, Edward H. Hamm, Jr. and Peele, who also wrote and made his directorial debut on the pic, which bowed in February via Universal and grossed $254.3 million at the global box office. It has been cleaning up on the awards circuit too, with Best Picture noms from the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice and a SAG ensemble nomination, along with several best picture wins from critics groups. The PGA announces its feature film noms January 5.

The plot centers on Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams), who go on a weekend getaway upstate to meet Rose’s parents. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, Lakeith Stanfield, Lil Rel Howery, Erika Alexander, Marcus Henderson, Betty Gabriel and Catherine Keener co-star.

“The electrifying response to Get Out demonstrates that the power of motion pictures to crystallize and reflect our collective social anxieties remains stronger than ever,” said PGA Awards chairs Donald De Line and Amy Pascal. “It’s hard to imagine two more different sensibilities approaching the problem of race in America than Stanley Kramer and Jordan Peele, but despite the different paths their stories take, their power springs from the same outrage, fearlessness and passion.”

The PGA Awards this year will also honor Ava DuVernay with the Visionary Award, Charles Roven with the David O. Selznick Award and Universal’s Donna Langley with the Milestone Award.
