“So, did you sign up for that dating site I signed you up for,” Lily Tomlin’s Frankie asks Grace (Jane Fonda). “Yes, and oddly I didn’t find the love of my life on hippie-round-up-dot-com,” Grace replies.
We also get a first look at Lisa Kudrow as Grace’s (Fonda) long-time manicurist (and new bff?). A clearly skeptical Frankie is greeted by Sheree with a hug, to which Frankie deadpans, “It’s a good thing I’m not allergic to rhinestones.” But Frankie appears to be a bit wary of the new friendship between Sheree and Grace. “What the hell is going on here?,” Frankie asks.
During an ATX Television Festival panel in June, creator and showrunner Marta Kauffman said Season 4 will be “really about the women coming to terms with age, coming to terms with how old they are, where their bodies are at this point, where their minds are at this point and what does that imply, what does that mean?”
“Excuse me, looks like you’re handing out dildos,” asks a police officer at one point in the trailer. “These are vibrators, exclaims Grace. “We are empowering young women.”
We also see Sol (Sam Waterston) and Robert (Martin Sheen) in couple’s counseling. “Have you two considered an open marriage?,” asks the therapist.
Fonda and Tomlin star as two women whose lives are turned upside down when their husbands, played by Sheen and Waterston, reveal they are gay and leave them for each other.
“We take a deep dive in season 4 into Brianna’s love life,” added June Diane Raphael at ATX, who plays Grace’s daughter Brianna. “Then there are some complications with Grace in Season 4 that are really interesting, and Mallory (Brooklyn Decker) is involved in that storyline.”
The Skydance-produced series has received seven Emmy nominations, including lead actress for both Fonda and Tomlin, a Golden Globe nom, among other honors.
