‘Ellen’s Game Of Games’ Preview Ratings Give NBC A Winning Hand; ‘Scorpion’ Dips

Ellen's Game of Games

No surprise that a debut right after The Voice (2.0/7) would be a good launch pad, but even NBC might be taken aback with how well Ellen’s Game of Games (1.7/6) did in its preview premiere Monday night.

Delivering the Comcast-owned network its best non-sports results in the 10 PM slot since the SNL Election Special of November 7 last year (aka the day before Donald Trump was elected President), the talk show host’s Game of Games held on to 85% of the 18-49 demo of its night-topping lead-in. On a relatively quiet pre-holiday night, it made Game of Games the second highest-rated and, with 7.35 million tuning in, second most-watched show of Monday on the Big 4. The DeGeneres-hosted GoG kicks off its actual midseason run January 2 at 8 PM, sans Voice.

On the topic of the singing competition show, in its last performance show of Season 13 before the winner is announced in tonight’s live finale, The Voice was up a tenth from last week. However, year-to-year, last night’s Season 13 live finals performance was down almost 10% from the comparable Season 11 episode on December 12, 2016.

Not that NBC likely cares that much, as the network won the night with a 1.9/7 rating and 9.73 million viewers. Overall, NBC’s demo rating result equaled ABC’s and CBS’ put together.

As for the House of Moonves, Kevin Can Wait (1.1/4) and 9JKL (0.7/3) were even with last week. The trio of Man With a Plan (0.9/3), Superior Donuts (0.8/3) and Scorpion (0.8/3) that made up the rest of CBS’ Monday were all down a tenth.

ABC’s night is a bit harder to assess because the Disney-owned net’s Atlanta affiliate preempted the schedule to show the Falcons’ Monday Night Football matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So expect more adjustments than usual there. With that said, the 8-10 PM Season 5 finale of The Great Christmas Light Fight (1.0/4) is even with its fast affiliate ratings of December 11, which went down a tenth in the final numbers. Finale to finale, last night’s TGCLF saw a decline of 17% from the fast affiliates of the Season 4 ender. That December 19 show went down a tenth in its final numbers, so perhaps we will see a similar dimming today. ABC ended the night with its The Year in Memoriam 2017 and an OK 0.9/4.

On a night that will see ESPN the overall winner with MNF, Fox was all encores and the CW had holiday-related specials.
