EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation. Jim Parsons and Todd Spiewak’s That’s Wonderful Productions has optioned the film rights to Michael Ausiello’s acclaimed memoir Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies, with Parsons attached to star.
Parsons and Spiewak will be producers, and Ausiello — the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Deadline’s sister site TVLine.com — will be executive producer.
In his heartbreaking, tragicomic memoir, Ausiello told the story of the eleven month span between when his partner, photographer Kit Cowan, got a diagnosis of terminal cancer, and his passing. Interwoven is the story of their meeting, falling in love, and the ups and downs over 14 years. After overcoming so many obstacles to find true love, how would they stand up to their biggest challenge? All of us here at Deadline, and our parent company PMC for that matter, adore Ausiello. We watched him grapple with grief over the loss of the love of his life, and admired how he channeled his emotions into a testament to Cowan and the life they built together. Getting the chance to see that memorialized onscreen seems a wonderful epitaph.
Published in September by the Simon & Schuster imprint Atria Books, Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies is currently in its fourth printing.
That’s Wonderful’s head of development and production Eric Norsoph will oversee the project for the company. The production company is repped by CAA, Principal Entertainment LA, and Gang, Tyre. Ausiello is represented by ICM Partners and Anonymous Content.
