Netflix Named PETA’s 2017 Company Of Year


For airing and creating movies and documentaries “exposing animal abuse in marine parks, circuses, and the meat and dairy industries,” Netflix today was named 2017 Company of the Year by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA said it was recognizing Netflix for “offering eco-friendly, pro-vegan films—including Cowspiracy, What the Health, Forks Over Knives and Okja” as well as for documentaries about animals used for entertainment, including Blackfish and Tyke Elephant Outlaw.

PETA claims the programs have “inspired countless people to go vegan and to stop supporting businesses that forceanimals to perform.”

“This company is creating a kinder, more compassionate world by showing millions of viewers that animals are thinking, feeling beings just like us,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in today’s announcement.

PETA claims that, following Okja‘s release, demand for its vegan starter kits “skyrocketed.” It also noted that SeaWorld’s attendance continued to plummet since Blackfish was added to Netflix’s lineup.

Past award winners include Beyond Meat, Ogilvy & Mather Advertising Bangkok, Daiya and Emulate.
