Kate Winslet On Working With Woody, ‘Titanic’ & ‘Avatar’, And The Most Shocking Moment Of Her Career – The Actor’s Side

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet visits our The Actor’s Side studio for a special two-part edition of my Deadline video series that explores the life and work of the industry’s top actors. In Part I,  Winslet talks about why she never gets tired of being nominated for and winning awards. With an Oscar, Grammy and Emmy, she is just a Tony short of joining the EGOT club, and she says her 14-year-old son has made her very aware of that. But she says those awards are just a byproduct of her love for acting and the craft. She says she loves making movies now more than ever.

Among those movies we discuss in detail are her spectacular debut in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, followed closely by Ang Lee’s Sense & Sensibility. Our conversation also leads naturally to that juggernaut known as Titanic and how she felt she could never have been prepared for the reaction or the change in her career after that movie opened. She also discusses about how she is excited to be returning to work with Titanic director James Cameron on the long-awaited Avatar sequels on which she will be doing motion-capture performing for the first time in her career. Part I wraps with what she calls the “most shocking moment of her career” (hint: it happened at the Golden Globes). Check out Part I above.

In Part II we explore one of her most beloved roles of Clementine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and how stunned she was to get it. She also talks about her two current films. With The Mountain Between Usshe praises her tendency to like diving into extremes and how she couldn’t wait to get on that mountain with Idris Elba despite punishing conditions. Finally she details her joy in working with Woody Allen for the first time in Wonder Wheela movie for which she is enjoying more awards buzz. She says Woody is the best writer of women she has encountered. Wonder Wheel opens Friday through Amazon Studios.
