‘Transparent’ Creator Jill Soloway Won’t Discuss Jeffrey Tambor Scandal, Advocates Anti-Harassment On-Set Rules

Undoubtedly the set of Transparent has felt serious shockwaves over the recent accusations against its star Jeffrey Tambor. But speaking on a panel at Vulture Fest LA on Saturday, the show’s creator and EP Jill Soloway would not directly discuss the issue.

“We have our own complications on Transparent,” they said. “And because there is an investigation that we are amidst I am not able to say anything at all about it. I’m trying to just protect the process and make sure that we do the most, have a process with the most integrity to make sure that everybody, that turns out fair, so I’ve been asked not to speak at all about it.”

Transparent actress Trace Lysette has said Tambor made lewd remarks and rubbed his body against hers in a sexual manner during filming. This is the second accusation against Tambor, the first coming from his former assistant Van Barnes, who didn’t provide specifics of the incident.

While Soloway wouldn’t discuss Tambor himself, they did address the background to the incidents. “There are people who are letting us know that they didn’t feel safe and that things went on,” she said. “Even on the safest of sets, where there are people really thinking constantly about, ‘How do we make sure people feel safe at work,’ things happened or things may have happened.”

Now Soloway said they want to see specific rules in place to protect people in the industry. “What if we don’t have sex with people at work,” she said. “We don’t talk about sex at work, and we don’t touch people at work. Just to try it.”

Soloway added that sexual content on a show should not make the creation of safe boundaries on set difficult. “There can be safe porn sets,” she recalled telling a co-worker. “You can still create consent around intimacy.” Since Transparent features sex and nudity, this is, of course, pertinent to their show. “You can do work that’s about intimacy and sex and you can still create boundaries,” they said.
