The Orchard Acquires ‘Kings’; Halle Berry-Daniel Craig Drama Set Against Backdrop Of LA Riots – Cannes

Updates throughout A few more details on The Orchard’s acquisition of Kings, a story Deadline broke this morning. After heated bidding following a strong promo reel, The Orchard acquired the Deniz Gamze Ergüven-directed film that stars Halle Berry and Daniel Craig.

Kings is described as a drama about a foster family in South Central, set a few weeks before the city erupts in violence following the verdict of the Rodney King trial in 1992.

The filmmaker helmed Mustangs, the 2015 Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.

Charles Gilbert of CG Cinema is producing and co-financing, with Maven Pictures co-founders Trudie Styler, Celine Rattray and Charlotte Ubben executive producing alongside Wei Han of Bliss Media. Maven Pictures and Bliss Media also co-financed the film.

Vincent Maraval’s Insiders is handling international sales; Maraval is also as an executive producer.

Deal was negotiated by Danielle DiGiacomo, The Orchard’s VP of Acquisitions with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.
