Jimmy Kimmel Reveals, Jokes About Surprisingly Low Oscar Host Pay

Associated Press

Aspiring Oscars hosts make a note: what you might think to be one of television’s highest-paying one-off jobs actually isn’t. Just ask Jimmy Kimmel who revealed today during an appearance on L.A. radio station KROQ’s morning show Kevin & Bean that he’s getting almost literally peanuts for hosting the 2017 Academy Awards. $15,000 to be precise.

Kimmel, who drew rave reviews for his performance hosting the Emmys earlier this year, which was a factor in getting the Oscars gig, was somewhat relaxed about the fee, joking that the modest figure is because “I think it’s illegal to pay nothing.” He said he revealed the number because “nobody told me not to. I consider this their fault,” adding that as far as he was told, the low ball figure is par for the course for previous Oscars hosts.

Fortunately, Kimmel will still be crying all the way to the bank. He recently signed a contract extension that will keep Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC through 2019.

The 89th Annual Academy Awards air February 26 on ABC.
