Denzel, Casey, Tom, Ryan – Who Tops Oscar Best Actor Race? Deadline’s Pete Hammond & Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil Duke It Out
It is that odd year when the Best Actor Oscar race isn’t as crowded as the field is for Lead Actress, but there are plenty of worthy contenders, and on the eve of the SAG nominations (which should give more clarity to the situation), Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil and I survey the landscape.

So is it Denzel Washington going for Oscar No. 3, or critics’ favorite Casey Affleck aiming for No. 1? Could singing, dancing and playing jazz piano make Ryan Gosling an upset winner? How about Andrew Garfield in either Hacksaw Ridge or Silence (he can’t be nominated for both but might split his votes).

Or maybe Tom Hanks, egregiously ignored in three of the past five years, flies in to grab one of the five spots even after being passed over by the Golden Globes. And don’t forget the likes of Viggo Mortensen, who did get a Globe nod, or Los Angeles Film Critics winner Adam Driver — or so many other possibilities where a real surprise is possible.
