EXCLUSIVE: It’s a busy couple days in the Baltasar Kormakur business. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr yesterday reported that the Everest helmer’s potential next project, Adrift, is coming together, and now here’s word of multiple sales on the filmmaker’s most recent Icelandic feature, The Oath. The thriller is the top-grossing movie in Iceland this year with 44K admissions and was the director’s return home after his 2015 Everest made over $200M globally (and topped Iceland’s 2015 box office). It also marks the first time he’s acted in eight years. Check out a new clip below.

The Oath premiered in the Special Presentations section at Toronto. It follows a respected doctor living an ordinary life in a quiet suburb of Reykjavík. Things begin to spin out of control when his daughter introduces her dangerous and manipulative new boyfriend to the family. As the boyfriend’s grip tightens, the doctor makes a desperate decision that will change everything.

Buyers now include Studiocanal in the UK, Klockworx in Japan, iQiyi in China, Falcon in the Middle East, Fabula in Turkey, N.E.W. in Korea, Cinema Prestige in Russia, A Contracorriente in Spain, Leone Film Group in Italy and Alamode Films in Germany and German-speaking Europe. A multi-territory deal with a studio is also currently in the works.

“I’m thrilled to see The Oath finding a worldwide audience,” says Kormákur. “While it’s a deeply personal story to me that speaks to some specific social issues we’re facing at home in Iceland, these are also human issues that are universally relatable and current in today’s world.”

The Oath is based on a script by Ólafur Egilsson, co-written by Kormákur. Producers are Kormákur, Agnes Johansen and Magnus Vidar Sigurdsson. Exec producers are David Kosse, Lilja Palmadottir, Margrit Stärk and Doris Schrenner. The film was produced through Kormákur’s RVK Studios banner in co-production with the UK’s Film4 and Germany’s ZDF Enterprises, and in association with XYZ.
