‘Libby & Malcolm’ Comedy Starring Felicity Huffman & Courtney Vance Gets ABC Pilot Order

ABC has made it official, giving a formal pilot greenlight to Libby & Malcolm, its high-profile comedy project from Black-ish creator/executive producer Kenya Barris and co-executive producer Vijal Patel, which has American Crime‘s Felicity Huffman and People v. O.J. Simpson‘s Courtney B. Vance set to star. This marks the first official order for the 2017 broadcast pilot season.

The comedy, produced by ABC Studios, landed at ABC with Huffman on board in September, scoring a big pilot production commitment in a competitive situation. It was put on a fast track for a pilot order, signing Vance as the male lead opposite Huffman. With the two Emmy winners on board as stars, a green light was considered imminent.

Written by Barris and Patel, Libby & Malcolm is a blended family show about two polar opposite political pundits — Libby (Huffman) and Malcolm (Vance) — who fall in love despite all odds and form an insta-family as well as a work partnership.

Barris executive produces through his Khalabo Ink Society alongside Patel, Huffman, Vance and Principato Young Entertainment’s E. Brian Dobbins.

With Barris also running his praised ABC comedy series Black-ish, Patel is expected to serve as showrunner on Libby & Malcolm.

The starring role in Libby & Malcolm would not interfere with Huffman’s commitment to John Ridley’s ABC/ABCS anthology series American Crime, which has earned her two Emmy nominations. She would be able to continue on American Crime concurrently with the comedy should both be picked up for next season.
