Lionsgate, China’s iQIYI Extend Relationship With Long-Term Output Deal


Lionsgate and Chinese online video platform iQIYI have entered a long-term output deal which will include the studio’s upcoming features as well as some library titles. The agreement is for SVOD, TVOD and AVOD streaming rights which iQIYI will have exclusively; it has also made a major promotional commitment.

The pact extends Lionsgate’s existing relationship with iQIYI, which has over 500M unique users. The Chinese firm has been streaming Lionsgate’s films since last fall and was also the studio’s promotional partner on Now You See Me 2 which grossed $97M at the Middle Kingdom box office this year to become Lionsgate’s biggest title ever in the market.

Included among films in the new deal are Otto Bathurst’s upcoming Robin Hood, starring Jamie Foxx and Taron Egerton; Lionsgate/CBS Films’ Patriots Day directed by Pete Berg and starring Mark Wahlberg; The Glass Castle, starring Brie Larson, Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson; Lionsgate/CBS’ American Assassin with Michael Keaton; and Wonder, starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay.

Lionsgate has been making increased in-roads into the world’s second-largest box office market, recently partnering with China’s Infinity Pictures/CMC and Yue Hua Entertainment Culture Communications on Step Up 6, a Chinese-language sequel to the $600M+ grossing franchise.

The agreement with iQIYI was negotiated for Lionsgate by SVP International Business & Legal Affairs Christian Perala.
