Jon Stewart Reacts To Donald Trump Win: “They Are The Swamp”

“Nobody asked Donald Trump what makes America great,” Jon Stewart said this morning on CBS This Morning, on which he appeared in order to promote new book The Daily Show: An Oral History. But, being the longtime TV face of political skewering as host of that late-night show, Charlie Rose also asked him for some post-election analysis.

“What are the metrics?” Stewart wondered of Trump’s campaign slogan: Make America Great Again. “Because it seems to me, from listening to him, the metrics are that it’s a competition.”

“What Trump’s candidacy has animated is the thought that a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural democracy is impossible. And that is what America, by its founding, and constitutionally is.”

“The ultimate irony of this election is the cynical strategy of the Republicans, which is: ‘Our position as government doesn’t work. We’re going to make sure…that it doesn’t work’.”

“They’re not draining the swamp. McConnell and Ryan – those guys are the swamp. And what they decided to do was, ‘I’m going to make sure government doesn’t work and then I’m going to use its lack of working as evidence of it. Donald Trump is a reaction, not just to Democrats, to Republicans…He’s a repudiation of Republicans. But they will reap the benefit of his victory, in all of their cynicism.”
