A24’s Free Fire, the shoot ’em up by British director Ben Wheatley and starring Best Actress Oscar winner Brie Larson, will hit theaters nationwide March 17. In addition to unveiling the release date, the distributor dropped a poster for the movie today.
The pic made its world premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival and critics there adored it, with the pic reminding them of Guy Ritchie’s earlier high-octane indie work. Martin Scorsese executive produced this action film about a lot of guys and a gal left in a warehouse full of guns after an arms deal goes wrong in 1978 Boston. Cillian Murphy, Jack Reynor, Armie Hammer and Sharlto Copley also star.
Free Fire is the second title after the Colin Farrell absurdist comedy The Lobster that A24 rescued from flailing distributor Alchemy. And one thing you can say about A24 is that it still knows how to resonate with indie audiences in a day and age when the art house sector faces threats from day-and-date streaming. Last year, A24 turned Alex Garland’s Ex Machina into an art house hit with $25.4 million at the domestic B.O. and an Oscar VFX win, and a writing nom for Garland.
