EXCLUSIVE: Niki Caro, the Whale Rider helmer who’s in post on the Jessica Chastain-Daniel Bruhl-starrer The Zookeeper’s Wife, has been set to direct Exposure. The film tells the story of scientist Rosalind Franklin, and her critical role in the discovery of DNA’s structure. The script is by Hayley Schore & Roshan Sethi and eOne Features president Xavier Marchand bought it in April.
Though unsung in the accomplishment, Franklin was instrumental in the discovery of the DNA’s double-helix structure in 1953 by Francis Crick, James Watson and Maurice Wilkins. She was an expert at crystallography and took the first photos that eventually led Watson to figure out the structure of the DNA. She never got the credit she deserved and died of cancer in 1958. They got the Nobel Prize in 1962. Caro will come on and develop the film to get it to the start line.
Caro, who just finished directing the two-hour Netflix pilot Anne Of Green Gables, is repped by UTA, manager Sophy Holodnik and attorney Linda Lichter. UTA Independent Film Group and ICM Partners are repping U.S. distribution rights to Exposure.
