Michael Haneke & Sony Classics Back In Business With ‘Happy End’

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American and Latin American rights to writer-director Michael Haneke’s new film Happy End, which features his Amour stars Isabelle Huppert and Jean-Louis Trintignant along with Mathieu Kassovitz and Toby Jones. The French production wrapped in August. Stefan Arndt and Veit Heiduschka are co-producers.

Haneke’s new film has been mostly kept under wraps, but a regional French paper reported last December that it is understood to have immigration as one of its key themes, although not the main focus. It was shot in France’s Calais region, which serves as a ferry port for transport to the UK, and has made headlines as the refugee crisis has escalated.

Amour won the Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2012 and was nominated in four other categories including Best Picture. SPC distributed that pic as well as Haneke’s The White Ribbon and Cache.
