‘Cruel Intentions’ Not Going Forward At NBC, To Be Shopped Elsewhere By Sony

NBC has made a decision on its Cruel Intentions reboot, opting not to pick up the pilot starring Sarah Michelle Gellar to series. The studio behind it, Sony Pictures TV, now is planning to shop it elsewhere.

NBC in May left the project in contention for a summer run. Over the summer, the network considered it as a possible original series for the long-in-the-works NBCUniversal OTT service. But with the latter nowhere near reality, a summer run remained the sole viable scenario at NBC as the options on the cast, extended in June, are set to expire in December. That involved adjusting the budget of the project, and lengthy on-and-off discussions between the network and Sony did not result in a deal. During that process, there had been some interest in the series from other outlets, though NBC had been considered the most realistic option.

At the May upfronts, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt called the soapy Cruel Intentions “a bit of an outlier for us, because there’s no other show like it in our list of genres.” Still, “we like it, and we’re still discussing it and trying to figure it out,” he  said.

Based on the 1999 cult movie, Cruel Intentions is set in present day and picks up more than 15 years after the film left off. Kathryn Merteuil (Gellar) vies for control of Valmont International as well as the soul of Bash Casey, the son of her late brother, Sebastian Valmont, and Annette Hargrove. Upon discovering his late father’s legacy in a hidden journal, Bash is introduced to a world of sex, money, power and corruption he never could have imagined.

Gellar stars alongside Taylor John Smith, Kate Levering, Samantha Logan, Sophina Brown, Coby Bell and Bryce Cass.

Kumble executive produces the NBC/Sony adaptation with the film’s producer Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film; Rosin and Ross co-executive produce.
