AFM: Major China Delegation Set; Bruno Wu To Speak At Conference Series

EXCLUSIVE: The American Film Market kicks off on Wednesday in Santa Monica with a sizable delegation from China. Over 200 execs are attending from the mainland with nearly 100 more from Hong Kong repping over 90 companies as Asia looks to deepen ties with Hollywood and the independent film business. The AFM Conference Series will also welcome speakers including Bruno Wu for panels entitled Producing in China and Marketing & Distributing in China.

This is typically a busy week for the PROC in LA as curiosity, exchange and collaboration have grown between the two film industries over the past few years. Separate from the AFM, the U.S.-China Film Summit that’s organized by the Asia Society takes place November 1.

The AFM’s China Conference Series will then be held on November 3 with speakers including Wu, Founder/Co-Chairman and CEO of Sun Seven Stars Media Group; Beijing In-Entertainment CEO Yugang An; the Motion Picture Association’s China head and VP of Asia Pacific William Feng; and Co-Exec director of the China Hollywood Society, Melanie Ansley. A roundtable discussion titled The Next Generation of Project Management for Production in Asia will also explore co-production solutions through Hong Kong.

This week’s China activity in LA comes on the heels of last month’s ride through town by Dalian Wanda Group Chairman Wang Jianlin who pitched the company’s Qingdao Movie Metropolis complex and a new 40% production subsidy to Hollywood. It also comes at a time when box office growth has hit some road bumps in the Middle Kingdom and ahead of a big end-of-year push to get turnstiles spinning faster.
