Fifteen-year-old Other People co-star J.J. Totah, one of the breakouts at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, is set to headline a TV comedy series. The project is executive produced by Other People producers Adam and Naomi Scott, who cast the young actor in the movie. The project hails from the Scott’s Gettin’ Rad Productions and Universal TV, where the company has a first-look deal.

Written by David Monahan and Danielle Hoover, the untitled half-hour comedy centers on 15-year-old JJ (Totah), an uber-confident, label-defying, tour de force who moves from small-town Indiana to New York City to live with his Aunt Nancy, an upbeat realist who’s convinced herself she’s happy with her life and will try to teach JJ that sometimes an old dream falls apart so a new one can fall together. It’s one brave step forward and two stubborn steps back as JJ pushes her to fly and Nancy pulls him back to earth — but eventually, they’ll both land somewhere in the middle of happy.

Parks and Recreation alum Adam Scott and his producer wife, Naomi Scott, will executive produce via Gettin’ Rad, along with Monahan and Hoover. Totah serves as producer.

This is the second sale for Monahan and Hoover this season. They also have comedy Manhood at Fox via Sony TV, Happy Madison, Seth Gordon’s Exhibit A and Storied Media. Based on the New York Times article “A Field Guide to Male Intimacy” and also inspired by Monahan’s life with his father and his adopted son, Manhood centers on a gay dad who discovers his teenage son has been seeking dating advice from his estranged father, because “Grandpa’s a ladies-man and you’re a men-man” and starts to worry that this is the first crack in an ever-widening gap between him and his straight son. Monahan and Hoover are repped by Gersh, Echo Lake Entertainment and attorney Erik Hyman at Loeb and Loeb.

This marks the first TV starring role for Totah, whose series résumé includes stints on Fox’s Glee, Disney Channel’s Jesse and Liv and Maddie and ABC’s Back in the Game.

Actor-singer Totah can be seen in Other People playing a flamboyant teenager obsessed with carrara marble. He recently wrapped production on Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ upcoming reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming. Totah also will be seen in Mark Rosman’s family film Time Toys and Netflix’s detective comedy Handsome with Jeff Garlin directing and starring. He is repped by WME, Trilogy Talent and Totah Entertainment.

In TV, Gettin’ Rad produced four Greatest Event in Television History specials for Adult Swim and has Deep S.I.X. in development at HBO. It  is repped by WME, Rise Management and attorney Wendy Heller. As an actor, Scott next will be seen in HBO’s limited series Big Little Lies, the Gettin’ Rad-produced feature Fun Mom Dinner and Netflix’s comedy film Little Evil.
