‘Vampire Diaries’ Ratings Down In Final Premiere, ‘Exorcist’ Up, ‘MacGyver’ Even

The CW

On a relatively steady Big 4 Friday that saw no Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs game on cable but a backstage Hamilton’s America documentary attracting a lot of heat on PBS, it was the CW in the spotlight last night.

Both The Vampire Diaries (0.4/2) and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (0.2/1) had new seasons debuts on the network on a new night – and the results for the former left blood on the floor. For the eighth and final season of the Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec developed series, it was a 33% fall among adults 18-49 from its Season 7 opener on October 8, 2015, a more watched Thursday. And by more watched, I mean that the 1.06 million viewers last night’s premiere drew is a 23% drop from what the Season 7 debut got.

As for the Golden Globe and Emmy winning Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh created musical comedy show, Crazy Ex was down just a tenth from its Season 1 opener of October 12 last year, a Monday. Having said that, once the lead in to Jane The Virgin in its previous slot, Crazy Ex did break up with 50% of its TVD lead-ins demo, a nutty number to be sure and must leave execs over at the CW wondering if it really was such a super idea moving the show to a potential TV deadzone.

Exorcist Season 1 Ep 105

Some might ask the same question of Fox and The Exorcist (0.8/3) on Fridays, but not this week. The possession filled series had revelations galore, took a big plot turn last night and saw a rise of tenth from its October 14 show. Lead-in Hell’s Kitchen (1.0/4) stayed even with last week as did CBS’ MacGyver (1.1/5), ABC’s Last Man Standing (1.1/5), and NBC’s Dateline (1.0/4) with the NBC news mag show bopping up 9% to a viewership season high with 5.3 million watching. The real clicking around the Comcast-owned net this morning may be the rise of Caught On Camera With Nick Cannon (0.7/3) with the 8 PM show, which was up 17% from its season premiere of last week.

At 9 PM Shark Tank (1.2/5) matched its fast affiliate result of October 14, which saw a rise of a tenth in the final numbers and could, as is commonly the case, happen here. Blue Bloods (1.1/5) was down two-tenths in the demo but still the most watched show of the night with 9.86 million tuning in. Also, the Tom Selleck-led NYPD family drama commonly sees an adjustments, as it did up a tenth last week, so that 18-49 decline might bulk up a bit later. Lead-in Hawaii Five-O (1.1/5) slipped a tenth in the ratings surf from its October 14 show as did ABC’s 8:30 PM comedy Dr. Ken (0.8/4).

Overall, CBS won the night with a 1.1/5 rating and 9.05 million watching

And Yes, there is a Dodgers vs Cubs game today – a rather important one, if you didn’t know.
