‘Willy Wonka’ Movie In Works From Warner Bros & David Heyman

Warner Bros/Paramount

Warner Bros has acquired rights from Roald Dahl’s estate to the Willy Wonka intellectual property, with the plan to make a new movie based on the character produced by David Heyman. The movie, to be penned by The Secret Life Of Pets scribe Simon Rich, will focus on Wonka, who was previously portrayed by Gene Wilder (in the 1971 Paramount movie) and Johnny Depp (in Warners’ 2005 update), and could serve as a potential franchise.

Heyman, who produced the Harry Potter movies and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, will produce alongside Michael Siegel, who manages the Dahl estate.

Dahl wrote two novels featuring Wonka: 1964’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and 1972’s Charlie And The Great Glass Elevator.

Variety had the news of the new movie first today.
