In a competitive situation with multiple bidders, literary management company Writ Large has acquired film and TV rights to Michelle Dean’s Buzzfeed article about a Missouri murder case that grabbed national attention.

The article “She Would Have Been the Perfect Mom For Someone That Was Actually Sick,” examined the bizarre 2015 case about Dee Dee Blanchard and her supposedly seriously ill daughter Gypsy Rose. Dee DeeĀ Blanchard was found stabbed to death in her home after her Facebook status had been changed to, “That bitch is dead.” Neighbors feared the worst for her gravely ill, wheelchair-bound adult daughter, Gypsy Rose, who had disappeared by the time the body was discovered. But Gypsy soon was found alive and well in Wisconsin, and the case took an unexpected turn. Gypsy never had been sick. Her mother had abused her and kept her a prisoner in the scheme, Gypsy claimed. So she’d persuaded a boyfriend she found on the Internet to help her murder her mother.

Dean’s August 18 article for Buzzfeed went viral, garnering more than 4Ā million views. Gypsy was convicted of second-degree murder and is serving a 10-year sentence.

Dean will pen the adaptation and will work with Writ Large to determine whether the project would be geared toward film or TV. This is the Writ Large’s first acquisition on the production side.

Dean is repped by Paradigm and the David Black Agency.
