‘Doctor Who’ Spinoff ‘Class’ Debuts 1st Look At NY Comic-Con + A Time Lord

BBC America

UPDATED 1:01 PM: BBC America just released the extended trailer for Doctor Who spinoff Class that was shown earlier today at New York Comic-Con. Watch it above.

PREVIOUSLY, 10:23 AM: The crowd at today’s panel got a couple of first looks at the new BBC America show today with the world premiere of its trailer at Madison Square Garden – with the Time Lord  himself making a cameo and The Vampire Diaries getting a shout-out.

“The Doctor is in Episode 1,” EP Brian Minchin said of the Peter Capaldi-played role, who appeared in the Class tease shown before the panel:

Set to debut in the spring with the Season 10 launch of Doctor Who, Class is set at the start of the school year at London’s fictional Coal Hill Academy. Debuting in the very first Doctor Who back in 1963, the Academy has been a frequent part of the Beeb series over the decades.

When the present-day school comes under attack, as happens in such dramas, a quartet of the Academy’s misfits band together against the incursion – with mixed results. “We’ve come up with something really special,” Minchin said onstage Friday. A longer trailer also was played for the MSG crowd, introducing the characters of the show and the school itself. The expanded trailer ended with a funny clip of the main characters discussing how much they enjoy the CW’s Vampire Diaries, created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec.

Class stars Greg Austin (Charlie), Sophie Hopkins (April), Fady Elsayed (Ram), Vivian Oparah (Tanya), all of whom were in attendance Friday. The eight-part series is the TV screenwriting debut of YA author Patrick Ness, who is best known for his book A Monster Calls. Asked if various villains and monsters from Doctor Who would be appearing in Class, Ness got a big laugh when he said he thought “cameos are like penises: When they are in a scene, they are all you look at.”

Executive produced by Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat and Minchin plus Ness, the Wales-shot Class was announced a year ago.
