NBC has given a put pilot commitment to Flight Risk, a woman-on-the-run thriller drama with comedic elements from Shameless executive producers Krista Vernoff and John Wells. The project hails from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based John Wells Prods.
Written by Vernoff, Flight Risk centers on Maddie Silva. Popular, funny and brilliant in a courtroom, her “take no mercy” approach towards the criminals she prosecutes has earned her the nickname “The Shark.” But when she loses her temper in a divorce mediation, comically threatening to have her soon-to-be-ex-husband killed and he turns up dead the next day, she has to go on the run and turn to a criminal she has been prosecuting to help her clear her name. Maddie’s humanity and sense of humor remain intact as she is forced to compromise every moral she has — and question everything she ever thought she knew.
Vernoff and Wells executive produce.
This is the second broadcast sale for Vernoff and Wells following Studio City two seasons ago. The project, which was inspired by Vernoff’s real-life experience growing up as the daughter of a drug dealer to the stars, went to pilot at Fox in 2015, narrowly missing the cut for a series order. It too was produced by WBTV and JWP.
In addition to Shameless, now in its seventh season on Showtime, John Wells Prods. and Warners have breakout new TNT drama Animal Kingdom, which was renewed for a second season.
Wells and former Grey’s Anatomy executive producer Vernoff are repped by CAA.
