Criminal Minds Behavioral Analysis Unit will no longer be a man down. The veteran CBS crime drama has cast Damon Gupton (Empire) as a new series regular.

Gupton’s addition will help fill the void left by the abrupt departure of original star Thomas Gibson, though Gupton’s character will not be a direct replacement for Gibson’s Hotch, who led the BAU. The new head of the unit will be revealed on the show and is expected to come within.

Gupton will play Special Agent Stephen Walker from the Behavioral Analysis Program which is the counterintelligence division of the FBI. He’s a seasoned profiler who will bring his spy-hunting skill set to the BAU. Walker will be introduced in the eighth episode of Criminal Minds’ current 12th season.

“Our BAU family is growing,” said Erica Messer, Criminal Minds’ executive producer/showrunner. “We’re excited to have Damon join the show and work alongside our amazing cast and crew.”

After winning  awards and successfully touring the country as a symphony conductor, Juilliard graduate Gupton turned his attention to acting. He has co-starred on such series as The Player, The Divide and Prime Suspect. His credits also include recurring roles on Bates Motel, Empire, Rake and Amazon’s upcoming David E. Kelley drama Goliath. In features, he was seen in  Whiplash and is also featured in director Damien Chazelle‘s followup, awards contender La La Land.

Criminal Minds already had been beefing up its series regular ranks ahead of Gibson’s sudden departure, following the exit of original cast member Shemar Moore at the end of last season. Fan favorite Paget Brewster is returning as a regular, reprising her role as Prentiss. The show also promoted Aisha Tyler, who plays Dr. Tara Lewis, to series regular and added new cast member Adam Rodriguez as FBI Agent Luke Alvez.

Criminal Minds also stars Joe Mantegna, Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J. Cook and Kirsten Vangsness. It is produced by ABC Studios in association with CBS Television Studios.

Gupton is repped by Brookside Artist Management, SMS Talent and Harden Curtis.
