El Rey Launches Short Film Anthology Series With Premiere Hosted By John Carpenter

EXCLUSIVE: Robert RodriguezEl Rey Network has announced the launch of The People’s Network Showcase, a new series of specials featuring short films from emerging independent filmmakers all over the world. The series, set to air quarterly with new two-hour episodes curated by genre or central story theme, marks the first time El Rey will feature select filmmakers and their work.

Legendary horror mastermind John Carpenter will kick things off, hosting the premiere episode, The People’s Network Showcase: Horror Edition, on October 30 at 8:00 PM EST. The Halloween and Escape From New York director will present 10 shorts, including the Eli Roth-produced Chainsaw, as part of El Rey’s month-long “Blood, Sweat and Fears” horror programming.

“When I started El Rey I wanted the network to provide a new pipeline for creators. My roots are in independent filmmaking and I believe in providing opportunities to people working outside of the studio system,” said Rodriguez. “We’ve discovered these terrific short films by very talented makers and with this on-air special hosted by my friend John Carpenter, we can help get them noticed.”

“Whether for digital or linear, programming is no longer dictated from the top down. Audiences today know what they want, and in many cases are able to make it themselves,” said El Rey Network President and G.M. Daniel Tibbets. “The People’s Network is our disruptive tool to demolish the wall between Professional and User Generated Content.”

In addition to featured shorts, The People’s Network Showcase will include interviews with the filmmakers as well as vignettes of current industry professionals sharing behind the scenes secrets of their craft. Read on for the complete slate of films to be shown on October 30.
