George R.R. Martin Teases ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel: Emmys Backstage

Tonight after the show won its second consecutive Outstanding Drama Series Emmy, the cast and crew of HBO’s Game Of Thrones went backstage to talk about the win. Where, as it happens, Game of Thrones creator himself George R.R. Martin hinted at the potential future of the franchise.

“I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game of Thrones, so there’s a lot of material there and I’m writing more,” said Martin. But, before you get too excited, he was clear nothing is guaranteed. “At the moment we still have this show to finish and I still have two books to finish so that’s all speculation.” Naturally, we’ll politely not mention that Martin was doing the speculating.

As for the upcoming seventh and eigth seasons, “it will be bigger and it will be better, but it will also be worse but mostly better,” said co-showrunner D.B. Weiss. Presumably, this means fans can expect that the unrelenting slaughter of beloved characters might, perhaps, relent after all by the time the series concludes with season 8.

Just kidding – of course fans should prepare for every character they love to die.
