Hrithik Roshan Preps ‘Krrish 4’ & A Clash For Christmas 2018 With Shah Rukh Khan?

There’s a potential new clash afoot for Bollywood stars Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan. The pair is already due to go head-to-head on India’s Republic Day next year (January 26) with Raees and Kaabil, respectively. Now there looks to be another holiday face-off on deck for 2018. SRK recently announced an untitled pic from director Aanand L Rai for Christmas 2018. Today, word is that Roshan will reprise his role as Indian superhero Krrish in Krrish 4 — which is also eyeing Christmas 2018.

This release date jockeying is becoming increasingly common as the top Bollywood stars, who create global events with each film, stake out prime holidays to maximize the home audience and the diaspora. But they don’t always stick. A planned July 2016 duel between Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Salman Khan’s Sultan made headlines only to see SRK move off of that summer Eid holiday in favor of the upcoming January 26 release. Sultan has gone on to be Khan’s No. 2 biggest hit ever with about $88M worldwide.

Fox Star Studios

Roshan doesn’t have a film in the Top 10 worldwide Bollywood grossers like the two Khans mentioned above, although he had a big hit with Fox’s 2014 Knight And Day remake Bang Bang. And he’s got a sizable international fanbase — 15M Twitter followers to SK’s 19.4M and SRK’s 21.2M. What’s more, the Krrish franchise is among India’s most successful. The last film grossed $37M in India and was the No. 2 movie of 2013; it picked up a solid $2.2M in the U.S. (Eros released that one and Yash Raj the two previous installments). The series is directed, produced and written by Hrithik’s father Rakesh Roshan. Priyanka Chopra co-starred in the last two Krrish movies which are a mash-up of superhero action, sci-fi and romance.

Indian media has been abuzz since Roshan tweeted the below with a picture of the Hindu Lord Ganesha dressed as Krrish:

His father then confirmed they are working on the fourquel and eyeing Christmas 2018. Production company FilmKraft tweeted today:

With Republic Day approaching, there has been little suggestion that Roshan or SRK will move off that January date. But with the Christmas 2018 releases only just announced, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a shift occur between now and then.
