Ryan Lochte Crashers Aside, ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Ratings Even With 2015 – Update

UPDATE, 2:25 PM: Adjust those NFL preemptions in LA, DC, SF and Pittsburgh last night and Monday’s Dancing With The Stars season debut looks a lot like fall 2015 – with the exception of the audience members who tried to rush contestant and disgraced Olympian Ryan Lochte.

Now having come down to ratings Earth, the opener of DWTS Season 23 pulled in a 2.1/6 rating among adults 18-49 with 12.19 million total viewers. Down 19% form this morning’s fast affiliates in the key demo, that’s even with the Season 12 debut of September 2015.

Shown out of primetime in LA and San Fran, DWTS wasn’t the only ABC show to see an adjustment as season finale of The $100,000 Pyramid moved down 29% from its fast affiliate demo numbers to a 1.0/4 rating. All the other originals last night stayed the same.

On any other Monday, the big shocker would have been the San Francisco 49ers shutting out the Los Angeles Rams 28-0 on Monday Night Football’s second kickoff game. But that scenario neglects the duo who rushed Ryan Lochte live on the Dancing With The Stars (2.6/9) debut last night.

Ratings-wise, the Season 23 start of DWTS looks great right now but likely won’t end up seeing much impact over last year. Although currently up 24% among adults 18-49 compared with last year’s opener, DWTS was impacted by NFL pre-emptions in the LA, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh and San Francisco markets. In overall viewers, DWTS drew 13.66 million, making it the most-watched show of the night.

Once adjustments are made later today, DWTS probably will end up steady with the 2.1/7 of its Season 21 debut on September 14, 2015 – when there were no Olympians crashed. Following DWTS, the finale of The $100,000 Pyramid (1.4/5) was up a big-ticket 40% from its previous original two weeks ago.

As the ABC dance competition series hit the floor for its latest run, American Ninja Warrior (1.7/6) and So You Think You Can Dance: Next Generation (0.6/2) wrapped their summer runs Monday. For the NBC competition series, it was a 15% demo drop from the fast affiliates of its Season 7 ender of last year and a 19% decline from the final numbers; compared with last week’s final numbers, ANW was up a tenth. Over on Fox, the Season 13 wrap of SYTYD: NG also was up a tenth from its Labor Day airing but fell 25% among the 18-49s from its fall 2015 finale to hit a season-ender low.

At 10 PM, NBC’s Running Wild With Bear Grylls (1.2/4) took no hit from Monday Night Football and rose 20% in the demo over last week.

CBS was all encores except for its Fall Preview (0.9/4) special at 8:30 PM. The CW was all Supergirl encores. Right now, ABC is winning Monday night with a 2.2/8 rating and 11.3 million viewers, but, as I said before, expect adjustments.
