‘Free Fire’ Trailer: Oscar Winner Brie Larson Comes Out With Guns Blazing – Toronto

Last year at the Toronto Film Festival, we saw Brie Larson as a single mother holed up with her small child in Room, the emotional drama that delivered the actress a Best Actress Oscar win after the film notched the festival’s People’s Choice Award. Well, this year, Larson is locked up in a different kind of room — actually a warehouse — and she has lots of guns too to fight her way out. Making its Midnight Madness world premiere last night was Ben Wheatley’s Free Fireabout an arms deal that goes wrong in 1978 Boston — but despite the pic’s simple setup, it’s a nail-biter. On Larson’s side is negotiator Ord, portrayed by a bearded Armie Hammer, and Irish Republican Army op Chris (Cillian Murphy).

Thank New York-based A24 for rescuing Ben Wheatley’s latest back in March after Alchemy’s financial turmoil prevented it from releasing the movie. Free Fire marked the distributor’s second purchase off Alchemy’s sinking ship, the first being the 2015 Cannes Film Festival Yorgos Lanthimos absurdist comedy The Lobster, which grossed $8M stateside at the box office.
