Aasif Mandvi To Star In ‘Fatwa’ Showtime Comedy Co-Written By Dave Holstein

Showtime is developing Fatwa, a dark comedy satire starring The Daily Show alum Aasif Mandvi who has teamed on the project with writer-producer Dave Holstein. The collaboration stems from the duo’s work together as writer-producers on another comedy satire, HBO’s series The Brink, on which Mandvi also co-starred.

Named after the word for Islamic legal ruling by an expert in religious law, Fatwa centers on LK Hussein (Mandvi), a struggling cartoonist whose death threat becomes the greatest thing that ever happened to him. Mandvi and Holstein will write the script and executive produce.

Mandvi was recently seen in Mothers Day, and has recurring role in Netflix’s upcoming series adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events. He also co-created the web comedy Halal In the Family, which won the Peabody-Facebook Futures of Media Award. He is repped by ICM Partners, Lillian LaSalle of Sweet 180 and attorney Bruce Gellman.

Holstein’s series credits also include Weeds, Raising Hope and the upcoming Showtime comedy series I’m Dying Up Here. He is repped by CAA.
