Emmy Ballots Due Today: Watch Gold Derby Vs Deadline Prediction Smackdown On Drama Series Actor Race

Television Academy

Final Emmy ballots are due no later than 10 PM PT tonight — after that you are out of luck. The ballot deadline brings to an end one of the most competitive and expensive Emmy campaign seasons in memory. If you still haven’t cast your ballot, Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil and I try to help you decide when we go head-to-head on what may be the most competitive acting race of all this year: the one for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series.

We agree to disagree on who wins but actually see eye-to-eye that in this race any one of the six nominees could take home the prize. That is because there is no reigning champ among them. Jon Hamm finally took the Emmy last year on his eighth try for Mad Men and Bryan Cranston had won four times before that, occasionally interrupted by the likes of  Jeff Daniels or Kyle Chandler.

Actually, among the nominees this year, Chandler, nominated for Bloodline, is the only one of the six who has been a previous winner here, and that came in 2011 when he won for Friday Night Lights. Kevin Spacey is contending with his fourth consecutive nod for House Of Cards, while Mr. Robot’s Rami Malek hopes to take home gold on just his first try. Bob Odenkirk returns to the category for this second try for Better Call Saul, and so does Liev Schreiber for Ray Donovan, while Matthew Rhys finally cracked the code for The Americans after being passed over three years in a row and now has his first nomination.

Who is the ultimate winner? It actually could be anyone, but O’Neil and I survey the field and throw the dice. To watch our smackdown, click on the link above.
