Universal Pictures

“What is the meaning of life … and why does food taste so much better in the trash?” Those questions and others have hounded pooches for centuries — right? — and now comes a film that digs for the answers. Here is the first trailer for A Dog’s Purpose, Oscar-nominated director Lasse Hallstrom’s family film about a dog who realizes the essence of his own existence through his own reincarnation that puts him into the lives of many owners.

It starts out as Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad) grows up and then grows old with his first boy. But after many dog years, time catches up with the beloved pet, and he shuffles off this canine coil. “And then, it happened.” Bailey returns to life as a female German shepherd who becomes a police dog. And then as a different breed with different owners. The many humans in the pet project are played by Dennis Quaid, Peggy Lipton, Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, Juilet Rylance, Luke Kirby, John Ortiz and Pooch Hall.

Gavin Polone produced the film from Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media, which Universal Pictures will open January 27. Check out the trailer above and let us know whether it’s a keeper or, well, a dog.
