“If you really feel you can’t take this on, you know, that’s your right.” Here is the first trailer for Manchester by the Sea, writer-director Kenneth Lonergan’s portrait of a Boston janitor (Casey Affleck) who, after the death of his brother, is forced to return home to care for his teenage nephew (Lucas Hedges). There he confronts the tragic past that separated him from his family and the Massachusetts fishing town where he was raised. But he isn’t interested in relocating — and neither is the kid, who reminds his uncle that “all my friends are here, I got two girlfriends, and I’m in a band.” Kyle Chandler and Michelle Williams also star.
Manchester by the Sea is only the third film Lonergan has directed, dating to 2000’s You Can Count on Me. He earned a Oscar nom for writing that pic and another for Gangs of New York two years later. Amazon bought domestic rights to Manchester for $10 million after an all-night auction at Sundance. It screens September 8 at Toronto, and Roadside Attractions will release the film November 18.
