‘Better Late Than Never’ Ratings Debut Solid, ‘View’ Special Doesn’t Get Many Viewers

After two-weeks of the Rio Olympics, it turns out American isn’t yet ready to come home yet from summer vacation – at least not if the trip is with William Shatner, George Foreman, Terry Bradshaw and Henry Winkler and the destination is Asia.

The 10 PM debut of NBC’s 4-week Better Late Than Never (1.6/6) was a solid start for the reality travel show based on a South Korean series. So solid in fact, that BLTN has emerged in the final days of the season as the top non-game show debut of the summer – topping the debuts of Maya & Marty, Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge and ABC’s now cancelled Uncle Buck. With 7.4 million watching, BLTN also had the best non-Olympics results in both adults 18-49 and total viewership that the Comcast-owned net has had in the time slot since the Season10 finale of The Voice on May 24.

Pushed by the steady return of America’s Got Talent (2.4/9) after 3-weeks off the air because of the Rio Games, NBC took Tuesday night in both the demo with a 2.1/8 rating and in viewers with 9.83 million watching.

Fox was all encores last night and CBS’s only original was Zoo (0.8/3), which was up 14% from its August 16 show. Viewershipwise, Zoo snagged an audience of 4.9 million – the best it has done since July 5. The CW’s MADtv (0.2/1) was even with last week’s repeat.

ABC’s Bachelor In Paradise (1.4/5) and Bachelor In Paradise: After Paradise (0.7/2) were both up a tenth now free of Olympic competition. But the 10 PM special The View: 20 Years In The Making (0.4/2) saw a drop-off of 43% from its lead-in to come not only behind BLTN but also a NCIS: New Orleans (0.7/3) repeat on CBS. The celebration of the Barbara Walters-created daytimer drew a scant 2.68 million viewers, only beating repeats of Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.35 million) and Lucifer (1.34 million) among its Big 4 rivals.
