‘Heat’ Reunion: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro & Michael Mann Set For Academy Screening

Here’s an event that’s well worth re-opening Kate Mantilini’s on Wilshire Boulevard for: Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are getting together again, but only onstage, as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a 4K DCP restoration of Michael Mann’s 1995 film Heat on September 7 at 7 PM at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Christopher Nolan will be on hand to moderate the Q&A featuring Pacino, De Niro and Mann; the riveting Los Angeles cop vs. crook crime noir paired the two method actors for the first time on the big screen.

Both brilliant and hardworking at what they do, LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Pacino) and professional thief Neil McCauley (De Niro) are locked in a deadly opposition in Heat, without any remorse when it comes to who takes out who first. While the scenes that the duo appear together are brief, they’re unforgettable, especially the chilling back-and-forth DeNiro and Pacino have over coffee in a diner scene shot at the old industry hangout Kate Mantilini.

Mike Fleming reported exclusively back in March that Mann was starting the book imprint Michael Mann books, with a series of novels to be developed for film & TV. One of the label’s first priorities? A Heat prequel covering the formative years of Hanna, McCauley, Chris Shihirles (Val Kilmer) and McCauley’s accomplice Nate (Jon Voight).

Mann’s inspiration for Heat stemmed from his friend, Chicago Detective Charlie Adamson, who killed Neil McCauley in a shootout in 1963.
