‘Jean Claude Van Johnson’ Trailer: First Look At Amazon’s Thriller Comedy Pilot

Jean Claude Van Damme’s recent career renaissance playing characters who as often as not are commentaries on his storied (and sometimes infamous) action movie career has been a lot of fun. Hopefully it won’t end soon, but it might be reaching its logical conclusion with Jean Claude Van Johnson, an upcoming Amazon pilot that casts the Muscles from Brussels as a secret professional killer who also happens to be, wait for it, a global action star. Operating under the alias “Johnson”, Van Damme was once the most dangerous private contractor in the world. Now retired, he’s brought back into the game after a chance encounter with a lost love. Now he’s deadlier than ever. Maybe. It’s playing as part of Amazon’s next Pilot Season, and the first trailer has been unleashed. Watch it above.

The premise is something like a reversal of Van Damme’s 2008 pic JCVD, which saw him playing a down and out version of himself caught up in a bank robbery. That film aimed for drama but this show is definitely leaning comedic, with the trailer focused exclusively on Van Damme (Johnson?) as he goes about his morning, barely exercising, eating pop tarts and using a Segway scooter to pick up his morning paper. Kat Foster (Your Family or Mine), Moises Arias (The Middle), and Phylicia Rashad (Creed) co-star in the series. Written by Dave Callaham and produced by Peter Atencio (Key and Peele) who also directs, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker (The Man in the High Castle) and Van Damme, the pilot will debut Friday, August 19 along with several other half-hour pilots Amazon Prime subscribers can vote on. You know what to do.
