Discovery Channel To Debut Seal-Slaughter Documentary ‘Huntwatch’ On September 22

Discovery Channel has acquired worldwide rights to the Ryan Reynolds-narrated documentary Huntwatch, which chronicles the fight to end the commercial seal hunt in Atlantic Canada, a fight that has been re-ignited by trends in the fishing industry in many parts of the world and fur demands in the Far East.

The film is the second title in Discovery and Lionsgate’s Documentary Film Partnership. Produced by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Huntwatch will debut on Discovery Channel on September 22 as part of the Discovery Impact banner, immediately following a limited theatrical release by Discovery and Lionsgate, and will debut worldwide later this year. Lionsgate will distribute the film on home entertainment worldwide.

“Like most people, I thought the horrendous practice of clubbing baby seals for fur ended a long time ago,” John Hoffman, EVP Documentaries and Specials, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Science Channel, said in today’s announcement. “By documenting these inhumane acts IFAW has created a valuable visual weapon to expose them. Discovery’s goal is to sound the alarm worldwide that this is still happening and ignite change.”
