NBC Sports Network Scores With U.S.-New Zealand Olympics Women’s Soccer Opener


NBC Sports Network averaged 1.3 million viewers for the U.S. women’s soccer team’s 2-0 victory over New Zealand on the opening day of soccer competition at the Rio Olympics. That’s more than double (+107%) the viewership for the team’s 2012 London Olympics opener, which drew 629,000 viewers for U.S. vs. France.

Viewership for the match (6-8 PM ET) peaked in the second half at 1.6 million between 7:30-7:45 PM ET.

Highlighted by goals from Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan, the match averaged a 0.77 rating on NBCSN – up 93% from the women’s soccer opener in 2012 (0.40).

Viewers streamed 10.5 million live minutes of Thursday’s Olympics coverage (featuring six women’s soccer matches) across NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. That’s up 84% from the corresponding day at the 2012 London Olympics (5.7 million minutes for six matches).

The U.S. women’s soccer team next faces France this Saturday at 4 PM ET on NBCSN. France defeated Columbia 4-0 yesterday.

The Opening Ceremony for the 2016 Rio Olympics is tomorrow at 7:30 PM ET/PT on NBC.
