‘The Accountant’ Trailer #2: Ben Affleck & The World’s Scariest Pocket Protector

If we learned anything from the global financial meltdown of 2007-08, the scariest supervillains in the world aren’t necessarily terrorists or renegade military dictators but accountants. Cue Warner Bros’ upcoming action thriller The Accountant, which takes this idea to its logical extreme. Starring Ben Affleck in the title role, a new trailer for the Gavin O’Connor-directed pic was released this morning and, in case you need a reminder that your tax extension only lasts until October, you can watch it above now.

Affleck stars as as Christian Wolff, a possibly on-the-spectrum math genius whose legal CPA business is a front for his actual career: handling the books for some of the most dangerous people alive. Fortunately, Wolff also happens to be a trained killer himself, which comes in handy when he takes on a legitimate new client (Anna Kendrick) seeking his expertise to help uncover vast corporate corruption. As he digs into her problem, his activities come under investigation by the Treasury Department and some of his scarier clients begin to suspect he’s a liability. Tense stuff, made more so by the inclusion of Radiohead’s 2000 single “Everything in Its Right Place” that has been frequently used set a creepy tone on film and TV, appearing in Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky, the 2009 drama Veronika Decides to Die and an episode of Nip/Tuck, as well as giving its name to an episode of Fringe.

Warner Bros is deep in the Affleck business with The Accountant┬ábeing just one of four upcoming films in which the actor-director appears for the studio. Alongside a cameo as Batman in next month’s Suicide Squad, Affleck also writes, directs, produces and stars in the period crime thriller Live by Night, due out January 27, and executive produces as well as stars as Batman in the Zach Snyder-directed Justice League, currently filming and due in theaters November 27, 2017.

Alongside Affleck and Kendrick, the accountant also stars J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Jeffrey Tambor, and John Lithgow.
