ThinkProgress Editorial Staff Ratifies WGA East Contract

WGA East

Writers and editors at the progressive news blog ThinkProgress have ratified a new contract negotiated on their behalf by the WGA East. It’s the latest win for the guild’s ongoing drive to organize East Coast news sites. In March, before it went bankrupt after losing a $115 million invasion-of-privacy suit, Gawker’s editorial staff ratified the guild’s first on-line media contract. The Huffington Post, Salon and Vice Media also have agreed to negotiate with the guild.

According to WGAE, pay raises for ThinkProgress staffers in the first year of the contract will average 6%, with a third of them receiving 9%-20% pay hikes. The agreement also includes provisions for severance pay, revenue sharing, paid time off and editorial independence, with the company’s health benefits package to remain in place.

“This collective bargaining agreement is a testament to the power of content creators who organize in a digital workplace,” said WGA East executive director Lowell Peterson. “The ThinkProgress union bargaining committee came to the table with a set of reasonable demands; and we are pleased that an agreement was reached that reflects their values and worth.”
