‘Wicked’ Movie Getting Four New Songs, Composer Says – Comic-Con

Wicked Broadway

At least four Wicked new songs will be added to Stephen Daldry’s 2019 movie adaptation of the long-running Broadway blockbuster, the musical’s composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz said at a “Behind the Music” panel today at Comic-Con. “At least, as of now, there will be probably four new songs in the movie,” he told fans, before adding that one of the songs was cut from the original Broadway production.

Although Schwartz wouldn’t name the old new song, musical theater geeks will no doubt hope he’s talking about “Making Good,” a near-legendary lost song sung by the wicked one herself, Elphaba. “Making Good” reportedly was the first song Schwartz wrote for the musical, but later said he deemed it too “mild” and it was eventually replaced by “The Wizard and I.”

During the Comic-Con panel, Schwartz said screenwriter Winnie Holzman (who wrote the stage musical’s book) is “hard at work,” and that the in-production film is on target for the December 20, 2019 release date. Marc Platt, who produced the Broadway stage show, is also producing the film version.

Take a look at this brief clip of Schwartz at today’s panel in Room 6DE — though it cuts off, rather wickedly, just before the composer mentions the old new song…
